Prologue

It was a cool November night many, many years ago on the balcony of the highest tower of the castle. The view was magnificent because it over shadowed the rose gardens.

He saw her standing on the balcony her hands on the railing staring out waiting. Then she saw him flying towards her. His wings spread out in a glide. She waved for him to land on the balcony. He landed soundlessly.

She ran over towards him her arms out and hugged him, “Cole! Thank the Earth that you’re ok! I heard the village men talking about how they had caught something large in the woods. I was so scared Cole.”

“Shh. Don’t worry so much. I wouldn’t let anyone catch me, not when I have you to come back to.” He replied pulling her in closer. “Besides I’m the fastest there is.”

She pulled back and looked him in the eyes and calmly said, “Why don’t you take me with you? I mean think about it, you wouldn’t have to fly so far every night and we could be together forever.”

“That’s unthinkable! I wouldn’t wish this hell upon my worst enemy let alone my true love!” he yelled out of shock at the question.

“Why? I love Cole, and even heaven is hell without you! I’m willing to do anything for you.” She said back, tears in her eyes now.

“No I can’t. I’m to young anyway.” He said trying to avoid her tears.

“What do you mean to young?! Are you afraid of commitment all of a sudden?!” she said now more angry than sad. Her eyes burning into his.

“No, that’s not it. I’m to you to change you even if I wanted to. I mean you wouldn’t change completely. You could loose your memories or even your mind, and there’s a possibility that you won’t change at all. But you would bare the wounds of someone who had changed. I’m not willing to teat something that may loose you in the process.” He said looking back into her eyes.

Her eyes had softened much and she replied with a soft, “I understand.”

He looked out into the sky and said, “The sun will rise soon.” Then he looked back at her, “Always remember you are my Pearl, the jewel of my heart. I will see you tomorrow my love.” With that he placed his hands on her cheeks leaned in and kissed her. Then he turned around on the railing and flew off, his wings spread out to their full length.

Pearl stood there and watched as Cole left until he was nothing but a speak in the horizon. Tears rolling down her cheeks involuntarily. “I will always love you Cole.” She said to herself.

The next day as the sunset was approaching Pearl went out on the balcony with a letter in her hand. She stuck the letter above the double doors that led to her bedroom. Then she stood on the railing, the sun all the while getting lower and lower. Pearl stood facing her room and mumbled something softly grabbed something around her neck, and lifted her feet off and started down. Her dress fluttered from the force of the air and the speed of her fall. The only way you could tell there was any emotion on her face was a single tear in the corner of her eye.

Night came. It was unusually dark and cold that night. When he flew to the balcony she wasn’t there waiting like she usually was, and the curtains were closed but not the doors. “Is she angry with me for not taking her with me?” Cole asked himself. Then he saw the note.

He took it down and held it in his hand. Cole began to read it out loud, “If our love can not live in this life I will meet you in the next Cole. Hopefully by then there will be nobody who can hold us back. Love, your Pearl.” He instantly understood and threw the curtains to her room open expecting her to be lying there. The room was empty.

Then Cole figured she must have been outside when she hung up the note. He ran back out and looked around. Again the idea clicked in his mind and he looked over the railing and saw a dark figure in the middle of the rose gardens. Cole didn’t even bother to fly; he just jumped off the balcony. He landed near her head.

Her eyes were closed and her face so peaceful. She just laid there on her back in the middle of the rose gardens. His knees buckled at the sight and he fell. Cole crawled toward her put his hand under her head and cradled it. Brushing the hair out of her face he murmured, “This can’t be true. Please wake up. This has to be a cruel joke.”

When his hand brushed against her cheek he realized the truth. She was dead. He screamed in disbelief, “NOOOOOOOOO…
